BenQ RL2455HM Gaming Monitor Review – 2022 Edition

What Makes A Monitor Good For Gaming?

Just because you’re a gamer on a budget doesn’t mean you have to settle for low-quality hardware, as evident by the BenQ RL2455HM gaming monitor. This budget display doesn’t sacrifice quality for a low price, offering many specialized features that gamers will love. Whether you’re a console player or a PC gamer, the BenQ RL2455HM gaming monitor offers an assortment of features that will make any game pop.

Appearance and Function

While most gaming monitors put an emphasis on looks, usually by drenching themselves in a glossy coating, the BenQ RL2455HM opts instead for a matte black look for its monitor. While some gamers will find themselves disappointed with this choice, the upside is that you won’t need to worry about fingerprints and other smudges appearing on your monitor. As a consolation prize, BenQ applied a liberal amount of black gloss to the stand of the RL2455HM.

The first thing you’re likely to notice when removing the BenQ RL2455HM from the box is that it’s both lightweight and durable, which makes it the perfect travel companion. Even if you do accidentally drop the monitor, it’s likely that it will come out of the experience free from damage such as scratches or scuffs.

One of the best features of the BenQ RL2455HM gaming monitor is its stand. While most gaming monitors require at least a screwdriver to screw the monitor into the stand, the RL2455HM is a tool-free experience. To connect the two pieces together, you just need to slide the monitor into the stand, where it will automatically lock in place: The entire process takes under a minute. To remove the monitor from the stand, all you need is a small thin object, such as a pencil or paperclip, to activate the release mechanism.

Like most monitors in the RL series, the BenQ RL2455HM features two HDMI ports, a DVI-D port and a VGA port. What this means for gamers is that you’ll have ample space to hook up your PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC to your gaming monitor all at the same time. In fact, most comparable gaming monitors only provide one HDMI port, giving the BenQ RL2455HM an advantage over other gaming monitors that are more than twice the price. In addition to the standard video inputs, this gaming monitor also includes a headphone jack and a standard audio port. Unfortunately, the RL2455HM gaming monitor lacks any analog connections, so you aren’t able to hook up any retro gaming consoles to it such as the Super Nintendo or the Sega Genesis.

Like most gaming monitors, the BenQ RL2455HM includes two built-in 2W speakers on either side of the screen. While these speakers don’t provide high-quality sound that is full of bass, the sound they do output is crisp and clear. If you’re a gamer who plans on frequently traveling with this monitor and doesn’t want to lug around a pair of dedicated speakers as well, you’ll find the built-in speakers are serviceable. However, it may just be best to invest in a high-quality pair of headphones if good sound is important to you.

The RL2455HM’s menu system is similar to what you would find on other gaming monitors, featuring sliders for display settings such as brightness, contrast and gamma. The menu system is straightforward, with options clearly labeled and a hierarchy that is easy to follow. Where the BenQ RL2445HM gaming monitor stands out is that instead of placing the buttons to access the menu on the underside of the screen, the buttons are instead on the side of the monitor. Also, any one of the buttons activates the menu system, rather than one specific button: perfect for night owls who don’t want to turn on a light to find the one particular button that opens up the menu.

Viewing Angle

Where the BenQ RL2455HM gaming monitor starts to falter is with its viewing angles. Because the monitor uses a TN panel system, the viewing angles are less than spectacular; once you deviate from the center of the screen, the color starts to become washed out. The further you get from the center, the worse the picture gets; unless you want everyone to bunch up in the center of the screen, you’ll want to forget about using this monitor to play multiplayer games.

Color and Resolution

The TN panel system doesn’t do the colors any favors either, sadly. That’s not to say the colors that the BenQ RL2455HM gaming monitor outputs are of poor quality, but rather they aren’t quite as vivid as what you would find on other gaming monitors. Where the BenQ RL2455HM stands out is not in its overall color or resolution, but rather in three key proprietary features it offers in those areas.

For professional gamers, input lag can make or break a game; for example, having a pressed button register even a millisecond too late can make the difference in a shootout with your opponent. The Black eQualizer feature allows you to sacrifice graphical quality for decreased input lag. By removing the color in the picture, your button presses will register instantly on the screen, leaving you a force to be reckoned with in games like League of Legends. You’ll also be able to spot your enemies easier due to the decreased shadows.

If you don’t want to sacrifice color for a lag-free experience, the unique RTS gaming mode will tailor the settings of the RL2455HM for real-time strategy games such as League of Legends or StarCraft II. You’ll achieve a perfect balance between outstanding picture quality and responsive controls in this picture mode designed exclusively for today’s top-rated competitive games.

If you plan on playing a lot of older PC games, you probably already know that most gaming monitors will upscale most images to a 1080p resolution. The BenQ RL2455HM is the exception to this rule, using proprietary Smart Scaling technology to let you manually set the monitor viewing size and resolution on a game-by-game basis.

With a 1ms response time, input lag is not a problem with the BenQ RL2455HM. Likewise, you won’t need to worry about motion blurring, ghosting or smearing even during fast-paced games such as Halo 5 or Dead Rising 3. For movie buffs, the RL2455HM makes a great monitor to watch your favorite flicks as there are no instances of choppy imagery even during long panning shots.

At under $200, the BenQ RL2455HM gaming monitor is an excellent deal when you look at the features that it provides. In fact, you’ll find it difficult to find any comparable HDTV or monitor that offers the specialized features of the RL2455HM, such as the Black eQualizer, in this same price range. If you’re gaming on a budget, the low price of the RL2455HM can fit comfortably into any lifestyle.

The BenQ RL2455HM gaming monitor provides the same high-quality gaming monitor that BenQ is known for but at a price that is affordable to your average gamer. While it doesn’t come with all the bells and whistles of the higher-end BenQ products, the RL2455HM still feels like an excellent deal for the price. With multiple HDMI slots, proprietary features like the Black eQualizer and a fast response time, the RL2455HM is perfect for both casual and professional gamers alike. While it may suffer from poor viewing angles and average color saturation, these minor flaws aren’t enough to stifle the excellence of the BenQ RL2455HM gaming monitor.
